Three Ways To Kick Fear To The Curb

By Janet Delos Reyes Johnson

Fear and other negative emotions rob you of the ability to focus and think clearly. When you feel overwhelmed, stressed out, and on the verge of a mental breakdown, it is difficult to think creatively and accomplish everything you need to get done in the day.

If you tend to allow embarrassment, anxiety, and other negative emotions to rule your life, these three tips will help you overcome the struggle. You can kick fear to the curb and lead a more productive, fulfilling life.

1. Implement systems and write your own operations manual.

When you are at your best, write an operations manual for your own business. This is intended to walk you through the steps when you are feeling anxious or fearful. Work systems into your business life so you can record them in your operations manual. This is a way to hold your own hand when needed, so you can move beyond these moments of weakness to more moments of strength and business success.

2. Disengage before fear or other negative emotions get the best of you.

When you feel any type of negative emotion overcoming you, it is time for a break. Go out to lunch. Go for a walk. Get a cup of coffee. Do something to clear your mind and temporarily put the cause of the emotion aside. You may be surprised at how much better you feel when you go back to the activity later.

3. Remember nothing is worth stressing over.

If something is meant to be, it is going to come together in some manner. There is no point stressing over something that is just not meant to be, and you never want to stress yourself out over something that will come to light in its own good time. When you adopt this type of thinking, it is easier to put fear, embarrassment, and other negative emotions aside and focus on positive thinking. Keep telling yourself that you may not see the light now, but you know it is at the other end of the tunnel.

It may help to remind yourself why you are trying to accomplish something in particular when you feel emotional or fearful. If you know that you are doing the work for a reward that comes at the end, it may be easier to shake the negative thinking.
